Dog intestinal worms can be a major problem for any pet owner. To keep your dog safe and healthy, it is important to be able to identify dog worms symptoms. A simple google search provides a lot of useful information on dog intestinal worms -- and a host of unsavory images. The easiest to identify, most telltale symptom of worms is that familiar "butt-scoot" across the carpet. Dogs do this in an attempt to relieve the extreme itching around the anus that results from an infestation of intestinal parasites.
Beyond this early symptom it is important to look for other signs of worms including: sudden weight loss, swollen belly, and worms and/or blood in the stool. Any one of these symptoms warrants a call to your veterinarian. However, when these features of intestinal parasites are taken together, it is important to call your pet's health care provider as soon as possible.
Some pet owners wonder, "Are dog worms contagious?" The nutshell answer to this question comes in the form of a bit of age-old wisdom: better safe than sorry. Since worm larvae can penetrate human skin, it is important to keep at least a pair of socks on when sharing space with an infected dog. It is especially important to keep babies away from areas where an infected dog spends his time, as a parasite infection can prove fatal to an infant.
Treating dog worms is a fairly simple affair. Your dog will be given two doses of medication, approximately two weeks apart. What is important during this time is that proper sanitation practices are observed to reduce the risk of spreading the infection to other animals or people. Treating worms in dogs requires nothing more than diligence in both making sure your dog gets the proper doses of medication (or "wormer") and keeping the area where he spends his time clean and free of anything that might transmit the infection to others.
