A walkin' the dog
Just a walkin' the dog
If you don't know how to do it
I'll show you how to walk the dog

It's such a common phrase and, perhaps, equally mundane activity that we often don't take time to reflect on that important daily outdoor time we spend with our canine companions. People walking dogs is easily equal to a spicy-sweet apple pie or a plump hot dog with all the fixin's in terms of ability to conjure up a feeling of good ol' Americana wholesomeness. Whether on a leash or simply obediently trotting alongside his master, a dog on a walk is a mainstay of neighborhood life -- whether it's a Chihuahua being led by a slender leather strip down the brightly-colored and colorful Venice Beach Boardwalk, or a Bloodhound loping, untethered, along the swampy marshland of the Mississippi delta.

Walking dogs is one of those rare and lovely examples of a truly symbiotic activity -- both Walker and Walk-ee benefit tremendously. Humans, of course, need daily exercise every bit as much as dogs, and yet we often afford a respect and duty to a dog's need for a daily constitutional that far exceeds the commitment we show to our own need for the self-same activity. The beauty part? In remaining diligent in our obligation to keep our pooches healthy and happy by getting them out in the fresh air for some much-needed scampering and sniffing, we also meet our own need for a bit of daily exercise. People walking dogs are also afforded the opportunity to take a moment out of their days to disconnect from the demands and technology of "indoor life" and connect to both nature and their community -- and connecting in that way at least once daily is crucial, even if for no more than a short jaunt around the block.

So, pull out the harness, grab the lead, and toss a couple treats in your pocket. When it comes to taking the dog for a stroll, there's never a better time than right now.

Lyrics above excerpted from Rufus Thomas' "Walking The Dog" circa 1963.
