Can dogs suffer from depression? The answer may surprise you. Anyone who has either personally struggled with depression or has a loved one who has battled its painful symptoms knows what a complicated and debilitating condition it can be. But there is something about depression that seems so, well, human. There is a gravity to it, a ring of existentialism. Does a dog really possess the depth of character necessary to suffer from such an affliction?
In short, yes. And even more fascinating is the fact that dog depression symptoms do not differ significantly from those endured by human beings. Signs of dog depression include: inactivity, listlessness, changes in eating and sleeping patterns, and a general withdrawal from people and/or activities that were once highly valued. Significant changes in a dog's life seem to be at the root of most canine episodes of depression. These changes can range from something substantial like a move to a new home to something that may seem somewhat trivial to the humans of the household, like a change in the dog's established daily routine.
While medication is occasionally used for dog depression treatment, more often than not a dog will be able to recover from a depressive episode if his owner ups his exercise routine, engages him more often, and puts an emphasis on activities the dog really enjoys. It is important to note that, just as with humans, excessive treats or other gustatory indulgences are not effective dog depression treatments.
So, if you notice your dog is experiencing a period of malaise, with no medical explanation, you may want to try the simple remedies listed above. If the dog depression symptoms are not alleviated within a reasonable amount of time, it is advisable to place a call to your veterinarian for further counsel.
